POSITION: PROGRAMMER

Introduction

Frontier Science is a non-profit specialist organisation providing data management, statistical analysis and reporting for clinical trials on behalf of customers worldwide. The staff of 34 has clients varying from small physician-led medical teams in hospitals, to research groups in university departments and internationally-renowned pharmaceutical companies.

Our collaborative projects range from proof-of-concept studies to Phase II and large multi-national Phase III trials seeking regulatory approval, across a multiplicity of patient groups including juveniles, and disease areas including pain, pulmonary disease, considerations of quality of life, and with a particular emphasis on cancers including breast cancer. The company is modelled along academic lines and operates in an exceptionally friendly and informal non-hierarchical manner, with a minimum of organisational engineering.

The opportunity we are offering provides not only the benefit of a unique lifestyle with access to all kinds of outdoor activities, but also the opportunity to work with a highly respected not-for-profit organisation which offers consultation and support to both industry and academic sponsored clinical trials. Our independent approach allows us to lead work on exciting trials ranging from small academic research projects to large international multi-centre trials seeking regulatory approval for new therapies. We have trials in a variety of disease areas including breast cancer, colonoscopy screening and neuropathic pain. We model our environment on an academic setting, but have little of the bureaucracy associated with large organisations.

FSS is committed to providing continuing education to staff in areas related to their job, and will provide opportunities for staff to attend training courses and workshops.

Overview of Position

The individual appointed will work with the statistical and data management staff to support various clinical trials. Duties will include operational support and maintenance for current systems, developing new functionality to facilitate future projects and supporting the needs of the statistical and data management teams. The role will cover a range of areas across the full software development life cycle, including database development and maintenance, application support and development.

The duties also include creation and maintenance of program documentation according to internal Standard Operating Procedures and in compliance with Good Clinical Practice requirements. The position is under the overall direction of the Biostatistics Team Lead in the Kincraig office.

This position also presents the opportunity to work with our colleagues and collaborators across the world. We have strong links with our parent organisation, Frontier Science Foundation, Inc (FSF) in the US. There are three offices in the USA in Boston, MA, Buffalo, NY and Madison, WI, an office in

Athens, Greece, and a new one in Oslo, Norway. We have a long and continuing association with the Breast International Group in Brussels, Belgium.

Prior Experience

Candidates should have experience with relational databases and SQL. Knowledge of SAS, OpenClinica, Pentaho or similar technologies is desirable but not essential. Candidates should have good problem solving skills using a logical approach, be highly motivated with a willingness to learn/research new technologies and self-manage workload. Ability to write technical specification documentation and work to required industry standards is important. The position will give the successful candidate the opportunity to develop skills in a stable working environment.

Experience in the following technologies would be beneficial: SQL, PostgreSQL, SAS, OpenClinica and Pentaho (Data Integration, Business Intelligence and Reporting), shell scripting, FTP, SVN and command line tools. Whilst candidates may not have experience in these exact technologies, exposure to similar technologies would be advantageous. The individual should be keen to learn new skills and expand their knowledge via self-learning. The successful candidate should have good communication skills and be highly motivated. They should also be able to work independently, show initiative and pay attention to detail.

A minimum of 2 years experience with relational databases and database programming is desirable however this should not discourage applications from more experienced candidates.
